Say It Isn’t So…My First Words of Advice for Teachers for 2016-2017

It’s 5:30 am on Friday morning and I am still on summer break.  Why am I up?  You know why.  It’s like that scrolling thing on your computer.  Your mind is already racing with a school to do list, and it can’t be stopped.  You new teachers have already spent $100 at the local teacher’s store.  For us, summer break is basically over.  We are one foot in the door, so let’s embrace it.

I am changing schools AGAIN this year, so I am starting all over AGAIN.  It’s all good though.  Just wanted to quickly share with you an article that covers the same information that I actually read at one of our 7:00 am faculty meetings last year (not that there are so articles that I don’t read, of course) given I can still barely see at that time of day.  It uses research by John Hattie and several others.   I know.  I can hear the collective groan.  I feelIMG_5169 sorry for Mr. Hattie, who is obviously much smarter than me, but I heard his name so many times that I just couldn’t stomach it again.  Maybe there was a good reason I was hearing his name over and over again.  Hmmm…

This is a link to an article that is very clear and short but worth our reading it.  There are several resources used and listed at the bottom.  John Hattie’s work pops up over and over again when looking at teacher effectiveness and strategies. That’s what I need to remember.  I can work on a cute room, room arrangement, resources…but what matters is this stuff.

Got your chocolate stash stocked yet?

Now it is time for the pregame show (that’s code for it’s almost August): get your hair and nails done. Get those appointments on the calendar for the rest of the year–one less thing to worry about. Schedule a massage for right after Labor Day. It’s your reward for still being alive and so worth it!!!! While getting the candy for kids, don’t forget the chocolate for you. And do you have a Keurig in your room? Better get one with K-cups of extra strong coffee.

You do have a Keurig in your room, right?

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 [a]fixing our eyes on Jesus, the [b]author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [c]and lose heart.”  Hebrews 12:1-3

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, my friend.  Let’s get this party started.
