Top Ten Words of Advice for Teachers Part 2

My mind is reeling.  It’s almost August.  We’ve gotten the emails.  Professional Development dates are on the calendar.

So since the blog Top Ten Words of Advice for Teachers or It’s August and You are Tired Already, Aren’t You? went viral last August (someone told me that and I had to google what it meant), I thought I would add Part 2 since my mind is already there.  I will repost that other one later.  I heard from teachers all over the US -thank you!  I love hearing from you, and believe me, I am right there in the classroom with you.  We are some desperate in need of help people.  So I hope this helps.  Remember I am praying for all of us.  God knows who you are.  Thanks for reading.  We are all in this together.

  1.  Sonic has 1/2 price burger night on Tuesday.  Not sure when the 1/2 price after 8:00 shake special ends for the summer, but you might be able to combine the two.  After all, you know there are some nights that you will be leaving the school having not eaten anything but those peanut butter and crackers at 9:00 am, and you are starving, no ravenous, and have already thought about eating those sIMG_5163tupid papers you said you would hand back graded tomorrow.
  2. Chik Fil A chicken nuggets and strips can be frozen.  No explanation here.
  3. Buy a lint brush to put in your car or desk.  It is not until you get to school that you discover the cat has obviously rubbed up against your leg.
  4. Discover Teachers Pay Teachers.  It’s too good to be true.  Never reinvent the wheel.  I love each and everyone of you who has posted your lesson plans and worksheets online for free and those of you who are selling your resources on TPT.  Love, I really mean it.
  5. Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Joann’s Michael’s and many more stores off year round discounts for teacher.  Here’s a great article to check out all the stores that offer discounts. The Complete List of 81 Teacher Discounts
  6. These organizers have become extremely popular.  My daughter, who is a 1st grade teacher and such a young puppy, has one and loves it.  Here’s the web site: Erin Condren I still like the old green attendance/lesson plan books.  I like to keep my attendance and grades in a written form in front of me.  I have to put my attendance online, which is fast and easy, but I need the paper record in front of me.  I keep all my grades online, but I jot down a hint of what we did in class each day so I can keep my wits about me when that infamous kid comes in saying, “I have been out for five days.  Give me all my work.”
  7. Watch episodes of “The Middle”. Except the part that we are believers and you can subtract any language, beer and anything else that is slightly not us, it’s as if someone has put a camera outside our window.  We are those people.  It makes me laugh–find SOMETHING to make you laugh.
  8. Buy an excellent water jug.  Otherwise, you will find that you never drink water, and when you do, it’s hot.  This picture is of the one I take to Haiti on mission.
This is my water bottle. It is Under Armour brand. It is little pricey but worth it. Also in the background you see our daughter’s class pet for her 1st graders-a fish.  I am thinking about a class pet for mine. A Piranha? Anaconda? Boa Constrictor? Ha, ha

I took it last year and then it went to school with me and then it never left my side.  It keeps water cold forever.

  9. Take your vitamins.  I buy chewable B-12 and Vitamin C.  They are faster.  I also fill a very small plastic box with my vitamins for the day, grab the water bottle mentioned in #8, and on the way to school, take my vitamins.  It gets some water in my system and again, that may not happen for hours.  Also, start practicing your bladder of steel exercises.  Every teacher in America probably stays severely dehydrated.
  10. Lastly, as I thought about last school year, I thought about the shortcuts and web sites that really worked.  Remember that at the beginning of the school year, you will be bombarded with all the latest, greatest new web sites and techy blah, blah, blah that might work and might not.  Hang your hat on one or two and do what you always do.  Out of all of them that we were hit with last year, here are the ones that were worth my time, meaning they were easy to understand, didn’t require a lot of set up, and were very simple for students and me to understand.  Last year I taught Juniors, and this year I will teach middle school, so I judge everything by the older students. I like Kahoot, GradeCam, and Newsela.  My daughters have also taught me to create a Spotify school music play list.  I have always used Pandora, but with Spotify, you get to create a playlist and have no commercials. I have a morning music playlist and classtime playlist.

The most important thing to remember is to pray daily for your students, for each other and that God will show His love through us to our students.  We must teach them to love, forgive, and respect each other.  This is only something that God, the One true God, can do in us and through us if you are a Christ follower as I am.  Nothing works without Jesus.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.  Ephesians 3:20-21

Fixing our eyes on Him,

Kathy McBroom

If you are a Kentuckian, I will be speaking Sept 30 at the Fueled Women’s Leadership Retreat in Louisville.  It is sponsored by the KBC.  Go to the KBC website for more info on this.  I will be speaking on being a Christian educator in the public schools.  Let me know if I can ever help you with women’s ministry.  I love speaking to women when I am not busy teaching.

  1. I like your blog, Kathy, and I’m not even a teacher. I pass it along to my teacher friends. Keep up the encouraging words. Teachers have a hard and wonderful job and so much potential to make a difference in the lives of our children and youth. Bless you and all the others out there doing their best.
