God’s Purpose (Monday, June 17, 2019)

This is the message that I will be presenting tonight in Ecuador to the ladies. Last year, each night we had 50-60 women attend. Remember, this is an area that has the start of a church with 20ish meeting each week, but other than that, no Jesus followers. It is a village of about 3000, with many surrounding villages. Pray for me tonight, and all of us each day. The field is ripe for the harvest in Rioverde, so we want to see God move in big ways. Our days will be packed, reaching as many ages as we can. On two different days, I and several others will be able to go into the school in Rioverde. For a teacher, this is an amazing and exciting opportunity. We will be teaching lessons and adding in as much as we are allowed about faith in God.

Monday nights talk:

God’s Purpose

Have you ever pondered the question “Why am I here?  What is my purpose? Do I have a purpose?” Why was I born in Tennessee in the United States and why were you born in Ecuador?  Why could it not have been the other way around?

Most people at one time or another have thought on this deep subject. Helen Keller once said, True happiness… is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”  Former President of the United States John F. Kennedy also said, “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.”

If you believe the bible, then you must accept that we are here for a reason.  Jeremiah 29:11 states “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  This means that God not only has a plan and a purpose for all, but that He has a plan individually for you.

We are created in His image Genesis 1:27.    Also in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, we learn that God created all things.  He created Adam and Eve. Why did he create man? Why not just leave this earth as a home for beautiful plants and animals?  We are created for Him. We are relational beings and therefore, we were made to be in a relationship with Him. Animals and plants weren’t designed that way at all: only man was.

The following verses show us God’s plan for mankind.  I ask that you listen carefully, but that at some point, you go back and read each one and pray, asking God to reveal understanding to you.  Understand though that God wants to know you, first and foremost. That’s His first plan for you. He first wants you to believe that He is the only true God, that Jesus is God in  the flesh and that only through faith in Jesus can we be saved for all eternity. This week we will talk nightly about what that means.

God’s purpose for us:

“Then God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.’” Genesis 1:28   God wants us to have a family, and to have children. This does not mean that if you are single or never marry or can’t have children that you are out of God’s will. Under man’s rule are the animals of the earth.

Since we were created in the image of God, that’s our number one purpose: to be the image of God to others.  We are to show people God. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16.  We can only do that if we know God. You can’t show others God if you don’t know Him yourself. The only way to know God is through Jesus.

“And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  Micah 6:8 He wants you to follow Him in this journey of life. His ways lead to peace, joy and true contentment in life. They also lead to eternal life with Him in heaven.

Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Again, we are to show others Jesus, God’s one and only Son. Through Him and Him alone is live, now and forever.

Looking at all of this, one can be overwhelmed.  How do I do this? God doesn’t expect us to. He wants to change us from within and live through us.  When we believe on Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, showing us and teaching us His ways.  Jesus lives through us by the prompting of our teacher, the Holy Spirit. It all begins with faith and the decision to give our lives to God by belief in His Son Jesus.

Join us each night as we talk about what that means.

This is such an unflattering picture of me:)
