How Do We Know Jesus is God’s Son? (Thursday Night’s Talk-Ecuador 201)

On Thursday night of our mission trip to Ecuador, I will be speaking on proving that Jesus is God’s Son. I appreciate all the prayers for this. This is such an important topic. The day that I wrote this, I became completely overwhelmed and lost all confidence that I could do any of this. We will be presenting the gospel constantly to anyone who will listen. Pray for boldness, and that the Holy Spirit will speak through me, and recall to mind all the verses that remind me that none of this is in my own power, not that I have one ounce, but that all of this is in the mighty power of Jesus, the One true King, the only way to heaven and freedom.

Jesus proves He is God’s Son

Since I was here last year, how have things been?  Have you had a good year? Mine has been stressful, interesting to put it lightly.  My daughter got engaged in the Fall. We planned a great surprise weekend with a time of celebration with our family.  She and my now son-in-law decided to get married this past March, on my and my husband’s wedding anniversary. This made my year quite busy.

I changed departments at my school and have had some difficult days at my school. My uncle, who was a second dad to me, past away on Easter Sunday. He was a wonderful man, 88 years of age and ready to die.  He knew that his last breath here was his first breath I heaven. He made it possible for me to be here with you, and I know that he would want nothing more than me to be here telling you that God loves you, proved it by sending His Son Jesus to earth as a bridge to God and overcoming death on a cross. Jesus and God are one, God is the one true God.  Belief in His son Jesus and following Him brings peace while here on earth, even in the worst of situations. It also brings the gift of eternal life. All will die and spend eternity somewhere. Through belief in Christ and Christ alone, we will spend eternity in His home heaven. Jesus is the only one person who died, said that He would rise from the dead and He did.  Let that soak in. After He died, over 500 people saw Him, possibly more. Here’s my central truth in life: I believe in the afterlife. The bible speaks of heaven and hell. If someone like Jesus dies, says He is going to rise from the dead, does and many can testify that He did, and there is lots of proof that He did, I am going to believe in Him.

While here on earth, Jesus did many miracles, not trying to prove that He was God’s Son but because He is God’s Son.  Think on the profound truth for a moment.

One such miracle is that He walked on water.  This is one of my favorites: let me set the stage for you.

Matthew 14:22-33

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

How many of you like to ride in a small wooden boat?

What if there was a storm: how would you feel now?

The disciples (followers of Jesus) had taken a boat out.  Jesus stayed behind to spend some time alone and pray.

Verse 25 says that shortly before dawn (so it is likely that the disciples spent all night on a boat being blown around by the high winds) Jesus decides to join them.  They are not by the shore where He is. Since He is God, He just walks across the water out to them.

Imagine yourself there:  how are you feeling at this point?

What would you have said?  I probably would have said, “Where have you been?”

The disciples were terrified to see someone walking towards them on water.  When is the last time that you have been terrified?

My dog Jake and I go for many walks around our neighborhood.  Recently, we came upon a house that had a dog in the yard. When he saw us, he came charging at us.  I believe my heart stopped. He suddenly stopped before he reached us because he was surrounded by an invisible fence, underground boundaries that if he crosses, he will be shocked.

What did Jesus say?  What does He say to us now in our moments of fear?   “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (vs 27)

How am I not to be afraid?  How am I suppose to just stop being scared? If that man can walk on water, He can save me.  He showed that the elements of this earth are under His rule.

Regardless of you situation today, if God so chooses to do so, He can change it completely.  Like with the dog charging at me, if there had been no invisible fence and he had continued to come straight for us, if God choose to do so, God could have just said, “Stop!”  and the dog would have immediately stopped. Everything is under the command of an Almighty God. Is this a God that you feel you could trust?

Recently, in my bad school year, God did just that.  In the middle of a crazy situation, God redeemed that situation in a way that only He could.  Redeemed means to make it right. He actually overshot Himself, making my situation more than right.  He proved to me as He has many times that I am His child. Because of my faith in Him, I am a child of the most high God.  If you put your faith in His Son Jesus, you are also. There will be moments when life will go bad because we live in a world full of sin and sinners, and He will say like He did with me “Enough.  Now I am going to show all of you Who is truly in charge.”

One verse I cling to is Exodus 14:13:

“Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians(their enemies at that time) you see today you will never see again.’”

God’s word is full of stories of God protecting His people.  Understand though that this does not mean that you will not have trials if you choose to believe in Jesus.  Jesus actually says that we will have trials. Christians will persecution because of their faith, but Jesus promises never to leave us.  He will walk through all of life with us.

John 16:33 states that Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

So, what do you think? This is a pretty amazing story, a man walking on water.  Everything I have stated tonight is an amazing mystery. How does all this work?  How did Jesus walk on water?

Christianity is based on faith.  This faith is a gift from God. Only through a supernatural faith which He can give me can I even believe that this story and so many more in the Bible are true.

Consider faith in Jesus.  Please grab a pamphlet on your way out that tells more about how to become a follower of Jesus
