Consider the Lilies

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?… “And why do you worry about clothes?  See how the lilies of the field grow.  They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”…  “But seek first his kingdom and his righteous, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.”     Matthew 6:25, 28-29, 33-34

    One day I was driving into my driveway and “I Can Only Imagine” came on the radio.  Immediately all of life paused for just a moment.  If you are not familiar with this song, it speaks of when we see Jesus, what will we do?  Will we stand in awe or dance?  I love that song.  But as I was pulling into my driveway, I had to stop and appreciate the moment.  I had to “Consider the lilies…” as the King James Version states Matthew 6:28.  My husband was sitting on the floor of the garage, playing with one of his backpacking “toys”, and Rachel, who was eight, was putting on her bike helmet to get ready for a ride around our neighborhood. Hannah, who was six, stopped playing and started walking toward the car.   Letting the song continue to play, I stopped the car and Hannah climbed into my lap.  Heaven will be unimaginable, but this life is not too bad either.  As I watched Robert and Rachel and held Hannah in my lap, I couldn’t help but enjoy the beauty of the moment.  One day my girls will be grown and gone, and Robert and I will be old and gray.  In these verses, Jesus asks the gathered crowd to not worry about the things of life.  I spend a lot of time doing just that.  These verses are such good instructions for life!  Clearly Jesus wants us to put him first and everything else will fall in place.  I also believe Jesus intended for us to enjoy life, taking time to stop and look around at our blessings.  I can only imagine what seeing Jesus will be like, but let’s try to enjoy the little bit of heaven around us everyday.
