The Proverbs 31 Woman
“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her; ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
Proverbs 31:10, 25-30
During worship one Sunday morning, a family sitting across of the sanctuary from me caught my eye. Mom, Dad, and their three boys all had bandannas tied around their heads. Because of chemotherapy, Mom had lost her hair. A week before at our children’s elementary school Open House, Mom told me how this would soon be happening. I can’t possibly image how that must feel or how it must feel to go through the constant 24 hour a day nausea that she is experiencing. As she talked, I realized I was talking to a lady of great faith in God. In her eyes I could see the courage shining as she shared about the peace that God had given her about this valley He was walking her through. So that Sunday when I saw her family sitting there wearing their bandannas, tears came to my eyes. During one of our altar times, they went together to the altar and knelt to pray. Dad openly wept, while Mom, her boys and some men from our church comforted him. This is truly a scary time in their lives, a time when God allows events to happen to draw us closer to Him. That week while trying to explain good and bad topics for paragraphs to my Junior English class, I was reminded of that moment at church when I got to witness love, courage and devotion to a true Proverbs 31 lady. When I thought about my friend, God immediately brought Proverbs 31:28 to mind. “ Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” I shared this story with my class, and I could see by the expressions on their faces that they were touched. We were all touched that Sunday, and the witness that she is being for all of us will be forever in our hearts. Pray that you can somehow be that kind of witness in someone’s life.
